Hottest Coldest Highest Deepest - Steve Jenkins

Jenkins, Steve. 1998. HOTTEST, COLDEST, HIGHEST, DEEPEST. Boston, NY: Houghton Mifflin Company. ISBN 061849488X

Have you ever wonder about the world you live in?  Maybe you’re curious about the coldest place on Earth? Perhaps you’re looking to find the location of the oldest or deepest lake?  Jenkins has collected many interesting facts that will answer those questions as well as some questions you never thought to ask.  The paper collage illustrations spark interest in the topic while providing the reader with details about the setting of each unique location. Each page contains a globe marking the geographic location and an inset map provides even more specific geography.  However, the most notable feature is the sidebars that provide scaled comparisons to aid readers in understanding the actual measurements provided.  Jenkins has created a truly engaging read that will have reader’s planning some unusual and uncommon vacations!

This nonfiction trivia book contains 14 double page spreads with each spread identifying one unique place on earth.  The first page is an introduction that invites readers to “visit the planet’s record holders.”  The last page provides a world map marking the 14 locations visited while reading the text. The paper collage artwork is just as engaging as the facts presented and gives additional detail about each distinct location.  Readers will be educated about some unique places in the world.

BOOKLIST review: “Highly effective visual education.”
KIRKUS REVIEWS: “The lyric beauty and sense Jenkins brings to his collages manifest a sense of place.”
